Minesweeper rules

  • Open a cell to see a number. It tells you how many of the 8 surrounding cells hold a mine.
  • Use the numbers to flag the mines and open the safe cells.
  • Open every cell without a mine to win. Open a mine and the game is over.
  • Your first cell and the 8 cells around it never hold a mine.
  • Tap an opened number when the flags around it match the number to open the rest of its neighbours at once (a wrong flag means you open a mine).
  • Every puzuru board can be cleared from the first cell by logic alone. You never have to guess.

Tips to solve faster

If a 1 has only one unopened neighbour, that cell is a mine. Start with sure spots like this.

When a number already has that many flags around it, every other neighbour is safe.

Compare two neighbouring numbers. If one number's unopened cells are all inside the other's, the difference tells you how many mines are in the extra cells (the 1-2-1 and 1-1 patterns).

Stuck? Look again at numbers you haven't used yet. These boards always have a next move you can be sure of.

Is it free? Do I need to sign up?

It's free and there's no sign-up. It runs right in your browser.

How do I flag on a phone?

Long-press a cell, or turn on Flag mode and tap. Tap again to remove the flag.

What is a no-guess board?

A board you can clear from your first cell using only the numbers, without ever guessing. We check this when each board is made, so the game never ends in a 50/50 coin flip.

How big are the levels?

Beginner is 9×9 with 10 mines, Intermediate 16×16 with 40, Expert 30×16 with 99. On narrow screens like phones, Expert is shown turned upright.

What if I close the page?

On the same device and browser, your game continues where you left off. One game is saved per level.

Is this the same as Minesweeper on Windows?

The rules and level sizes are the classic ones. puzuru's Minesweeper is a separate game built on those rules, with one difference: every board can be solved by logic alone.
